Entebbe, Kilifi, November 28, 2022 The National Institute for Health and Care Research (NIHR) Global Health Research Group on Vaccines for vulnerable people in Africa (VAnguard) project was launched at the Uganda Virus Research Institute (UVRI), Entebbe and KEMRI|Wellcome Trust Research Programme, Kilifi.
To tackle disease we need evidence to be generated through every type of health research study. The Global Health Network conference aimed to bring together health research teams, organisations, health-workers, policy makers and practitioners to explore together how health research can be embedded into every healthcare setting.
The WHO Regional director Dr Matshidiso Rebecca Moeti visited UVRI on 17th November, 2022 to learn more about the work at UVRI including the Ebola activities namely testing and sequencing and how these are addressing the outbreak.
The tour included site visit of the Arbovirology, VHF, EPI and MRC sequencing facilities.
The CEO of Gavi Dr Seth Berkley recently visited Uganda from 2-7 November 2022. As part of his visit, the CEO had a tour of the UVRI campus on Monday 7 November 2022. The CEO was accompanied by colleagues from Gavi and officials from Ministry of Health.
The Princess Royal started the four day Uganda visit on 25th October 2022 at the Medical Research Council (MRC), Uganda Virus Research Institute (UVRI) and London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine (LSHTM), Ugandan Research Unit. She was welcomed by Prof Kaleebu who gave her a tour around the campus and was able to see a variety of research work projects currently ongoing.

The training on Modern Viral Diagnostic technologies was hosted from 10-12th October 2022 by the Uganda Virus institute under the umbrella of The Pan-African Network for Rapid Research, Response, Relief and Preparedness for Infectious Disease Epidemics (PANDORA-ID-NET) which is the EDCTP funded project.
The Uganda Virus Research Institute(UVRI) team led by the Director Prof. Pontiano Kaleebu and attended by Mr John Kayiwa on 3rd October,2022 met the World Health Organisation(WHO) team led by Dr Abdou Salam Gueye, Director WHO Afro Regional Emergency Director. Others present were Drs Mariam Nanyunja and William Lali from WHO.
Over the past couple of years, UKCDR has been convening a global taskforce on equitable partnerships that EDCTP has been participating in.
