Women's Day Diamond Jubilee Medal for Dr Serwanga

Dr. Jennifer Serwanga received well-deserved recognition for her Diamond Jubilee Medal from HE The President in yesterday’s Women’s Day awards. This is one of the country's highest civilian honors. She was recognized for her contributions to science. 

She is a prominent Principal Research Scientist in Immunology, MRC/UVRI and LSHTM Uganda Research Unit, currently serving as the Assistant Director of Research at the Uganda Virus Research Institute and the Assistant Professor at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine. With a rich educational background, including a DPhil in viral immunology from Murdoch University and extensive management training, Jennifer has cemented her expertise in the field of immunology, particularly in vaccine development against global viral threats like HIV, COVID-19, and Ebola.

Her career highlights include leading major international vaccine trials, such as the multi-site PrEPVacc and COVAC-1 and COVAC-3 trials, and contributing significantly to understanding immune responses to viral infections. Jennifer's work in coordinating a pan-African laboratory network and her efforts in capacity building and mentorship, especially in the African context, have been instrumental. Her leadership in securing multimillion-dollar research grants and her role in numerous national and international technical committees showcase her profound impact on global health research and policy.
